Holding Nothing Back

A common response when creating Christian music is that the song should have an explicit Christian message. While that aspect is important I believe that instead of helping people come to God it puts a limit as to what can or cannot be expressed in a song. Even King David was explicitly questioning and doubting God’s presence in his songs, so why shouldn’t we do the same? I have researched support for being explicit in Christian art, specifically in the area of music, and holds to shared concret truths in the gospel and Reformed theology. Songs, written by Christian artists, that contain emotional depth, specifically in the realms of lament and grief, reflect aspects of the gospel and benefit the emotional health of the church.
